Don`t meddle in Myanmar`s affairs: China tells UN envoy

Beijing, July 10: China has told visiting UN Secretary General's special advisor on Myanmar that the situation in the oil-rich neighbouring state did not pose a threat to the region and the international community should not intervene to bring about democratic changes.

"China believes the situation in Myanmar does not pose a threat to regional and international peace and stability. What happens in Myanmar should be solved independently by the people in Myanmar itself," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Qin Gang told reporters here.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo and Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai met with Gambari -- the UN special adviser on Myanmar and exchanged views with him on the situation in Myanmar and mediation efforts of the UN, he said.

The United Nations had sent Gambari to China to seek support for international demands that Myanmar's military junta makes democratic changes.

The international community can provide "constructive assistance" to Myanmar, Qin said.

Myanmar and China have agreed on a multi-million project to build a pipeline to bring oil to southern China.

China, a major weapons seller to Myanmar at 'friendship prices,' has invested heavily in helping Yangon upgrade Indian Ocean naval facilities. China is also a major importer of Myanmar's timber and minerals.

As a neighbour of Myanmar, China hopes to see a stable and economically developing Myanmar, enjoying ethnic and social harmony, Qin said.
